How to order

1. Size — nominal door size (width x height).
2. Frame & Throat Depth — welded for masonry, knock-down for drywall.
3. Hardware & Swing — lock type and function, and left or right hand.

Self-closing, self-latching stair doors

Stair doors must close and latch on their own to keep smoke and fire out of the stairway. Three spring hinges close the door and the latch or panic bar holds it shut. Check your drawings and local code for the required rating, swing and re-entry hardware.

Frame types & throat depths

• Welded frame (masonry & block walls, set as the wall is built): 4 7/8" throat.
• Knock-down frame (installs into a finished drywall opening): 3 3/4", 4 7/8" or 6 1/8" throat.

Throat depth = the overall wall thickness the frame wraps: 3 3/4" for 2-1/2" studs, 4 7/8" for 3-5/8" studs, 6 1/8" for thicker or double-layer walls (5/8" drywall each side). Need a different depth? Call (718) 455-8442.

Hardware options

• Passage — always unlocked, latch only; the door closes and latches but never locks.
• Panic bar — opens with a push from inside; no outside trim. Need outside key or lever access, or a fire-rated exit device? Ask us.

Sizing & swing

Order by nominal door size. A 36" x 80" unit has an actual door of about 35-3/4" x 79-1/4" and an overall frame of about 40" x 82". To choose the swing, stand on the outside (the side the door swings away from): hinges on the right = Right Hand, hinges on the left = Left Hand. Need a reverse (out-swing) or a custom size?
