FAQ

Door bell & chime FAQ

How does a non-electric door chime work?

A visitor presses the button on the outside plate, which mechanically strikes a two-note chime mounted on the inside of the door. There is no wiring, transformer or battery, so it keeps working in a power outage and needs no maintenance.

Will it fit my door?

The S. Parker 1602 fits metal and wood doors 1-3/8" or 1-3/4" thick and installs in a 1-3/4" hole plus a 1/2" hole, 2" on center. The Newhouse MC145S mounts with screws; its included screws are for wood doors, so use fasteners rated for steel on a hollow metal door. Both come with a mounting template.

Can I see who is at the door?

Yes. Both units include a 180° one-way viewer, so residents can see who is outside without opening the door. Visitors cannot see in.

Which chime should I choose?

The S. Parker 1602 is the heavy-duty standard found in NYC apartment buildings, with a chrome outside plate and a drilled-through install. The Newhouse MC145S is a lower-cost option with a slim silver faceplate and a slide-to-view peephole cover.

Can I replace an old chime on a fire-rated door?

Cutting new holes in a labeled fire door can affect its rating. If you are replacing a chime on a fire-rated door, call us first and we will help you choose a unit that fits the existing prep.
