Why a steel pair?

Wide openings, built to take abuse

A double door gives you a wide, clear opening for equipment, carts and crowds while each leaf stays a manageable size. Hollow metal pairs are the standard for schools, hospitals, offices, warehouses, mechanical rooms and building entrances — durable, secure and available with fire ratings.

Common configurations

How do you want the pair to work?

Pick the setup that fits your opening — we prep both leaves to match.

CONFIG 01

Lock + flush bolts

Active leaf with a cylindrical or mortise lock; inactive leaf held by top and bottom flush bolts with a lock strike.

CONFIG 02

Rim exit device + flush bolts

Active leaf with a rim panic device; inactive leaf with flush bolts and an overlapping strike.

CONFIG 03

Push / pull, both active

Both leaves swing freely with push plates and pulls — common for corridors and service areas.

CONFIG 04

Rim devices + removable mullion

Both leaves active with rim exit devices closing against a removable center mullion.

CONFIG 05

Surface vertical rods

Both leaves active with surface vertical rod exit devices, with or without the bottom rod.

CONFIG 06

Concealed vertical rods

Both leaves active with concealed vertical rod devices for a clean, tamper-resistant face.

Pair hardware

Astragals, bolts & coordinators

The parts that make a pair close, latch and seal correctly — quoted with your doors.

Shop door hardware →

Flat astragal

Mounted on the active leaf of out-swinging pairs to cover the meeting edge and stop light, drafts and prying.

Z / wrap-around astragal

Mounted on the inactive leaf of in-swinging pairs, with cutouts for flush bolts and strike.

Flush bolts

Manual or automatic top and bottom bolts that hold the inactive leaf closed, with a dustproof floor strike.

Coordinator

Makes the inactive leaf close first so the astragal seals — required on rated pairs with fire exit hardware.

Fire-rated pairs: rated pairs generally need a steel overlapping astragal (weatherstrip astragals don't qualify) and a coordinator when fire exit hardware is used. Some double-egress pairs and ratings of 90 minutes or less may not require an astragal — we'll confirm against the label requirements for your opening.

FAQ

Double door questions

What comes with a hollow metal double door?

The pair of leaves, primed and prepped for the hardware you specify, with hinge and closer reinforcements built in. Frames, exit devices, flush bolts, astragals, coordinators, glass and louvers are quoted as add-ons, so you only pay for what the opening needs.

Are your double doors fire rated?

Yes — pairs can be built and labeled for fire-rated openings, including 20-, 45-, 60-, 90-minute and 3-hour applications. Rated pairs need the correct astragal, flush bolts or rated exit devices, and a coordinator where required. Tell us the rating on your plans and we will match the components.

Do I need an astragal?

Usually, on single-swing pairs. Rated pairs typically need a steel overlapping astragal, though some double-egress pairs and lower ratings may not — always confirm against the label requirements. Astragals are not used with open-back strikes or with pairs using double vertical rods.

What finish do the doors come in?

Doors ship with a factory-applied, rust-inhibiting gray primer. Primer is not a finish coat, so plan to paint the doors after installation.

Can you build unequal pairs or odd sizes?

Yes. We fabricate equal and unequal pairs and custom widths and heights in our Brooklyn shop. Send the overall opening size and the leaf split you want.
