FAQ

Mortise lockset FAQ

What is a mortise lockset?

A mortise lock sits in a deep rectangular pocket cut into the edge of the door. The latch and the deadbolt live in one heavy-duty steel case, which makes it stronger and longer-lasting than a bored cylindrical lock. It is the standard entry lock on apartment and office doors throughout NYC.

Will these fit my door?

Both locks use a 2-1/2" backset and a 7-5/8" tall faceplate for standard 1-3/4" doors. Before ordering, compare your existing faceplate, backset and cylinder location with the dimension drawings in the product photos. Our mortise prep steel door slabs are prepped to take a mortise lock. These locks do not fit a cylindrical (161) bored prep.

Which hand do I need?

Stand on the outside of the door (the key side) and push it open. Hinges on your left is Left Hand; hinges on your right is Right Hand. If the door pulls toward you from the outside, it is a reverse-bevel door — call us before ordering and we will confirm the right lock.

Lever or knob?

Choose the satin chrome entrance lever lockset for offices, common areas and any opening that needs ADA-friendly lever handles. It is also a direct replacement for Marks USA 114A / 116A preps. The solid brass apartment entry knob lockset is a cost-effective match for residential apartment doors where a knob is already in place.

Do they come with keys?

Yes. Each lockset includes a 1-1/8" 5-pin mortise cylinder with two keys. Any locksmith can rekey the cylinder or key it to match your building.

Are these locks fire rated?

These mortise locksets are not sold as UL listed fire-rated hardware. For labeled fire doors, see our UL listed locksets or call us and we will help you spec the right lock for the opening.

Do you offer contractor or volume pricing?

Yes. We supply locks, doors and frames for full buildings and multi-unit projects. Contact us for a project quote.
