FAQ

Steel door unit FAQ

What comes with a KIN steel door unit?

Everything for one opening: a flush hollow metal steel door, a 16-gauge steel frame, three 4-1/2" square-corner spring hinges (US26D satin chrome) and a cylindrical lockset. The door comes prepped for the hinges and lock, so it's ready to install.

What's the difference between the 20-gauge and 18-gauge units?

Both use the same 16-gauge frame, hinges and lockset. The 18-gauge units use a heavier steel door for high-traffic or abuse-prone openings. 20-gauge units are $587.88–$621.00; 18-gauge units are $668.00.

Welded or knock-down frame — which do I need?

Choose a welded frame for masonry or block walls and a knock-down frame for sheetrock (drywall) walls. The frame option is on each product where both are offered.

What size unit should I order?

Order by the nominal door size, for example 36" x 80". The door itself is 1/4" narrower and 3/4" shorter (35-3/4" x 79-1/4"), and the overall door-and-frame size is larger — about 40" x 82" for a 36" x 80" unit. We list 24" to 36" widths and 72" to 96" heights.

Which lock function should I pick?

The cylindrical lockset comes in Storeroom (outside always locked, key only), Entrance (push-button lock inside, key outside), Passage (never locks), Classroom (locked or unlocked by key from outside) and Privacy (push-button inside, emergency release outside). Tell us the function when you order.
