FAQ

Commercial door hinge FAQ

What's included with each hinge order?

You get the hinges only, in the pack size listed on each product. Spring hinges ship with screws — the SP81 3-pack includes machine screws and wood screws. The door, frame and lockset are not included.

Butt hinge, ball bearing or spring hinge — which do I need?

Ball bearing butt hinges (MacPro MPB79 / MP79) are the everyday choice for commercial steel and wood doors. Spring hinges close the door on their own, so they're used where a door must self-close — like apartment entry doors — without a separate closer.

What size hinge fits a standard commercial door?

Most 1-3/4" thick commercial steel doors take 4-1/2" x 4-1/2" hinges. Our 6" TH6 spring hinges are a heavy-duty option for NYCHA-style self-closing doors. Not sure? Send us a photo of the existing hinge.

What are NYCHA spring hinges?

The S. Parker 2029 TH6 single-action spring hinge has a non-removable top cap so the spring can't be tampered with, meeting New York City Housing Authority requirements. It comes prime coated for painting.

Are these hinges fire rated?

The SP81 spring hinge is UL listed, and the MP79 is listed for 3-hour fire-rated door hardware. For a fire-rated opening, the door, frame and all hardware must be rated for the assembly — call us to confirm before ordering.
