Choose your frame

Welded or knock-down?

Throat depth is the overall wall thickness the frame wraps. Pick the frame type, then the throat that matches your wall.

Welded frame

One rigid piece with welded corners, set as the wall goes up. The strongest option for masonry and concrete block walls and new construction.

Masonry & block wallsThroat: 4 7/8"

Knock-down frame

Ships in three pieces and wraps a finished drywall opening — ideal for retrofits and tenant fit-outs. 3 3/4" fits 2-1/2" studs, 4 7/8" fits 3-5/8" studs (5/8" drywall each side), 6 1/8" fits thicker walls.

Ordering guide

How to pick the right swing

Door handing chart: right hand, left hand, right hand reverse, left hand reverse

Stand on the outside of the opening — the side the door swings away from.

Right hand: hinges on the right, door swings away from you.
Left hand: hinges on the left, door swings away from you.
Reverse (RHR / LHR): the door swings toward you — call us if you need a reverse swing.

Measuring: order by nominal door size. A 36" × 80" unit has an actual door of about 35-3/4" × 79-1/4" and an overall frame of about 40" × 82". Check your drawings or local code for the required swing — or send us your rough opening and we'll confirm.

FAQ

Panic bar door questions

What comes with a panic bar exit door unit?

A 20-gauge, 1-3/4" hollow metal door made without a lock bore, a 16-gauge welded or knock-down steel frame, three self-closing spring hinges and a Tell 8300 aluminum push bar exit device.

Can it open from the outside?

Not as standard — the push bar is exit only. Ask us to add outside trim if you need key or lever access from outside.

Is the push bar fire rated?

For a labeled fire-rated opening, ask us for a fire-rated exit device and we'll quote the unit.

Which sizes are available?

30", 32", 34" and 36" wide by 80" or 84" high. Other sizes are built to order.

Welded or knock-down frame — which do I need?

Choose welded for masonry or block walls and new construction (4 7/8" throat). Choose knock-down for an existing drywall or stud wall: 3 3/4", 4 7/8" or 6 1/8" throat to match your wall thickness.

How do I get my door unit?
